How do we read a Guitar tab.



Ex 1 tuning notes O=Open string ( not fretted )

The 6th string is string closet to you face ( the thickest string the Guitar).
If we look at bar 1 , we can see on the TAB that it lies on the Bottom.

1st string High is at the top of the page.

That is how tab works bottom E bottom of the Tab, high E top of the Tab


How to find fretted notes on the Tab





Ex 2 How to find fretted notes on each string

Lets start the 6th string ( bottom E ). If you Start from you peg head and count along the fret wires( Vertical metal strips), the count 5 of the them, that is 5th postion.

hence the tab reads 6th string , 5th position.

use that same method for the rest of the strings..


You may have  dot`s( or Block inlays) they are guiders for positions.


positions like 

Dot 1 = 3rd fret
Dot 2 = 5th position
dot 3 = 7th position   
dot 4 9th position
dot 5 = 12th position= this is has 2 dots. Is an octave ( Example 6th string open E , then at 12th  fret is E again but one octave higher )

Now if we go back to the 6th String position 5 , should be at the 2nd dot.
