The site below is a great way to learn scales.
www.circleoffifths.com/#axzz3jly8qccg
Music is very mathematical when it come to music. It`s based on the Piano keys
7 that is White A B C D E F G
5 BLACK ( GROUPS OF 2 AND 3 ) We get C# @ D# then F# G# and A#
Maj and Minor scales has 7 notes.
Let`s build a scale ( for now take my word for it)
C major Scale has not flats or sharp ( hence all the White keys)
so we Get C,D,E,F,G,A,B. Now lets put this into a Maths.
Each key is worth a 1/2 tone( or semi tone ) and we will write this a S( semi) and T( is 2 semi tones )
The chromatic scale is made of 12 notes ( C,C#.D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A,A#,B)
In words is
R(Root is the Key note of the scale= R
2nd is a Tone=T
3rd is a Tone=T
4th is semi= S
5th(this note will give the next scale in the Clock wise of sharps(#) and scale name) = T
6th( We can will find the Minor scale construction for the note.) = T
7th is worth a Tone
Hence short hand is R T T S T T T
this is for the Major Scale
C D E F G A B
We start from the Root note of C
R=C
2nd=T( Rember T is worth two semi tones) =D
3rd=T= E
4th=S= F
5th=S=G
6th=A
7th=S=
Now let look at the 5th we get the note of G that would be the next scale and it will have One Sharp= F# try the formula for the Major Scale
No lets look at the 6th( A note ) that is the Minor Scale ( We use that Root Note and construct the Minor) If we move right to left we will get A B C D E F G
Minor Scale formula is R T S T T S T
A B C D E F G
In words
1st=root
2nd is a Tone
3rd is Semi tone
4th is a Tone
5th is a Tone
6th is a semi Tone
7th is a tone
Note that the 3rd note is the scale is C( hence we have the Major Scale)
This is the very basic of Music
A lot to take in.
Why bother you may ask?
Well for a start if we wanted to try a different Guitar tuning like Open G (Major tuning )
Hence Chord theroy is made from these laws.
Ok let try the C Major Scale
we use 3 notes the Root , 3rd and the 5th
Hence we Get
R=C
3rd=E
5th =G
We do the same for the Minor scale
Let`s try the A Minor scale
R=A
3rd=C
5th=E
I won`t get into the rest of the chord naming as this would take long to to do
Now let go back the Open G from the 6th string to 1st Right to left we get ( DGDGBE) The G major chord is GBD( R,3rd and the 5th)
More more thing is we flatting the 3rd of Major chord we get the Minor chord. Open G minor would be ( G, Bb(if we move down the scale it becomes flat, hence we B is down a 1/2 step down to A#=Bb)
Hence Open G minor is ( DGDG (Bb) D).
That was a lot info for one session
Summery we have looked at
1 Circle of 5th web site
2 Major scale and how to build
3 the 5th note of the Major help to find the next scale clock wise and we move along one Sharp(#) at a time
4 the 6th note is the Minor scale and we looked at how build it
5 Some chord construction Major and Minor ( R,3rd and 5th )
6 Open Tuning
7 And how change a Major chord to Minor Chord by faltering the 3rd by going to the scale by a 1/2 step( If we shaping the 3rd in a Minor chord we the Major chord )
