lets look at A minor natural cousin of the C major scale( ie take the 6th note of C major scale ie C D E F G (A) B) Start on A note then we get the A minor scale
Natural Minor
A B C D E F G
Harmonic minor SHARPEN THE 7TH NOTE of the natural scale ( G IN THIS CASE) We then get
Harmonic minor
A B C D E F (G#)
Melodic Minor sharpen the 6th and 7th of natural scale 6th( F) 7th ( G)
Ok this can done on one string , great way to thump the scale in your head.
E major E minor
Note the that there 4 common notes that both share ( E, F#, A and B)
Start with
E minor to get the harmonic scale we sharping the 6th(*) E minor we sharping the 6 and 7 the denoted with ( * and **)
An example of E minor harmonic scale ( Hold your back)
Hear is the trick apply that to all open strings ( B,G,D,A)
Blues scale add a note between the 4th and 5th of the scale Be bop add a note between the 6th and 7th of the scale
Bottom line what ever the open string is the positions remain the same.
Shame that i never though of the this before. Good luck and from this you be able to tranpose this to any key.
A hint.
Let imagine we play a capo at the 1st fret, the the pitch would be raised up a 1/2 tone
hence open is now F. The capo acts a the Open string , then try that tab and should fin the notes for the Key of F and so on. I wish i thought of this before as helps to find scales with capo on.
Try it with a a chromatic tuner, then you can make up scale like
6th= E 5th= 7th=E 4th= 2nd= E 3rd=9th=E 2nd=5th=E
from that build on scales.
Then with a capo shift these up one fret and so on.
